Problems With Your Air Conditioner? 2 Tips To Find Out What Is Wrong

If your air conditioner is not working properly, you may be able to determine what the problem is on your own. Below are two tips on how you can do this. You can then decide if you can repair the problem yourself or if you need to contact an air conditioning service.

Check the Thermostat

This is the easiest thing to check, but you need to make sure your thermostat is set to cool and that the temperature is set right. You never know if someone in your home switched it to heat or if they increased the temperature so much that your air conditioner is not turning on. If this is the case, change the settings, and your home should start to cool down.

This would be a good time to replace your thermostat if you have an older one. Newer thermostats can be programmed at certain temperatures at different times of day. For example, you can program the thermostat to turn down at night to keep your home cooler while you are sleeping, and then turn it up for daytime. You could also set it to turn the air conditioner off while you are gone at work, and then automatically come on in time for you to walk into a cool home.

Check the Power

If your air conditioner will not come on at all, check the circuit breaker to ensure it has not flipped to the off position. You should find a circuit breaker panel somewhere in your home or in a garage. Once you find it, open the door, and you will see several circuit breakers. Each breaker should be labeled as to what it powers. If the circuit breaker to the air conditioner is in a different direction than the other breakers, flip the breaker so it is in the same position. Check the air conditioner to ensure it has power.

If the air conditioner still will not turn on at all, go to the thermostat and turn the fan on by changing the switch to on instead of auto. If you hear nothing when you do this, the control may be burned out and will need to be replaced. In a case like this, you will need to hire a professional air conditioner repair service to help you.

There are many more things that can cause problems with an air conditioner. The contractor that you hire can go over these things with you in more detail so you will know next time what the problem may be.
